Cleaning and Periodic Maintenance of CNC Machines

How should the daily maintenance of CNC machine be done?

1. Cleaning:
   • Clean the area around the CNC machine and the work area.
   • Remove chips, oil and other dirt. Removing chips from the working area of the machine prevents jamming of moving parts.
   • Use a suitable brush or air gun for cleaning.
2. Lubrication:
   • Lubricate the moving parts of the machine. This usually includes the specific lubrication points specified by the manufacturer.
   • Check oil levels and top up if necessary. Proper lubrication ensures proper machine operation and reduces wear.
3. Coolant:
   • Check the coolant level and add coolant as necessary.
   • Make sure that the coolant is clean and of the proper concentration.
4. Filters:
   • Check the machine's air filters and clean or replace them. Dirty filters can adversely affect the performance of the machine.
5. Controls:
   • Inspect the machine electrical and control panels. Tighten loose connections.
   • Make sure that the emergency stop button and other safety measures work properly.
6. Precision Parts:

   • Observe for any unusual vibration, noise, or signs of heating.
7. Errors and Problems:
   • Note error messages and warnings on the machine. Get technical support if necessary.
8. Record Keeping:
   • Write down your daily maintenance activities and observations in a logbook. This is useful for forecasting future maintenance and repair needs.

In addition to daily maintenance, CNC machines may also have weekly, monthly and annual maintenance requirements. For such maintenance activities, it is important to follow the maintenance manuals provided by the machine manufacturer.

Note: Compressed air is not used between the spindle and the slides to avoid the risk of chips escaping.
